Shell Cutting & Safety
It is generally considered that the dust produced while cutting pearl is not in itself toxic – it is mostly calcium carbonate. However it is sharp & abrasive, &, if inhaled in sufficient quantity, will irritate the lining of the lungs creating a build-up of mucus that can cause breathing difficulties. It is therefore essential when cutting pearl to wear a mask at all times. I also run a vacuum cleaner- the hose carefully positioned to further eliminate dust & aid visibility while cutting.
